We are nearing the end of the first Re-FREAM grant, an opportunity for artists and designers to work together with scientists and technologists within a consortium of partners. In my last blog post, I illustrated many different explorations that my partners and I had been exploring towards the goal of creating a sensor garment for stroke rehabilitation. Since then, we explored many interesting possibilities until we were able to confidently narrow our wide research into the best choices for materials, techniques, and design.

[NEW BOOK] Technology, Design and the Arts - Opportunities and Challenges
Posted by: Rmna Rmna 5 months, 1 week ago
Editors: Rae Earnshaw, Susan Liggett, Peter Excell, Daniel Thalmann
This open access book details the relationship between the artist and their created works, using tools such as information technology, computer environments, and interactive devices, for a range of information sources and application domains. This has produced new kinds of created works which can be viewed, explored, and interacted with, either as an installation or via a virtual environment such as the Internet. These processes generate new dimensions of understanding and experience for both the artist and the public’s relationships with the works that are produced. This has raised a variety of interdisciplinary opportunities and issues, and these are examined.

[POLICY BOOKLET] Designing support measures promoting connections between artists and ICT, by RegionArts
Posted by: Rmna Rmna 7 months ago
Cultural and creative industries (CCIs) have always played an important driving role in the development of innovative processes that leverage human capital, vertical specializations and networks - often informal - that contribute to the creation of the 'soft economy'. The creative profession is not only the creator of initiatives with a strong social impact but also generates positive effects on the economy. During the lockdown, in fact, CCIs have exponentially increased the use of digital technology: on the one hand, the awareness of the importance of ICT, a channel on which to invest more resources, has increased; on the other hand, the technological gaps of cultural organizations that would need greater interaction with ICT professionals to develop integrated strategies and key competencies have become evident. The crisis also brought to light the urgent need to further encourage cross-fertilization between the cultural and creative sectors and traditional industries - such as health and education - to develop new, more sustainable business models, increase the innovative offer and generate positive spillovers on the territory and the economy.

Leonardo/ Olats - "All Women Crew" 2020 workshop

Teaming up with the FEMeeting initiated by Marta de Menezes and Dalila Honorato in Portugal in 2018, Leonardo/Olats proposed to have an "All Women Crew" for its 2020 Space Art Science Workshop to "celebrate women in art, astronautics and astronomy".
Doing things remotely is something known in the field of space activities: from driving robots on Mars to landing probes on a comet to scanning the deep sky with telescopes. When it became obvious that the workshop would not take place this year, the organizers decided to put together a remotely built collective contribution. They have created a deck of cards and asked each participant to answer the same first question "what has attracted you to space" and then two other questions picked up by chance. The participants' answers can now be consulted in a series of podcasts, as follows:
